The Legal Cooperation Cluster hails the conviction of suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) for violation for Illegal Possession of Explosives and Explosive Devices.
In a decision issued by the Regional Trial Court (RTC) of Palawan, Branch 51, suspected NPA members namely: Ronces Paragoso, Glendhyl Malabanan, Rimbuwan Bener, Joelito Tanilon, Jenny Ann Bautista and Lumpat Awing were sentenced to suffer reclusion perpetua. It can be recalled that Antonio Molina, an alleged NPA leader, was included as among those indicted but he passed away in 2021 prior to the promulgation of the decision.
The decision of the RTC, as with any other judicial decisions, is a byproduct of thorough hearings and meticulous presentation of evidence that should meet the highest standard of proof in any court of law, i.e., proof beyond reasonable doubt.
Thus, the LCC takes this opportunity to remind everyone to be circumspect in branding the charges as fabricated and the RTC decision as unjust. The mere fact that a case was not decided in one's favor is not a license to trample upon the rule of law and the administration of justice.
Finally, the LCC lauds and stands united with the Department of Justice (DOJ) for its successful prosecution of the case. Indeed, the fight against communist armed conflict can be won; one case at a time.
